Typical issues for heritage homes include:

- Repair and replacement of fittings with appropriate materials, in context with the original design
- Checking and keeping an eye out for age and weather related things like water damage, seals, and structural issues like timber cracking, warping or rot
- Proper matching of materials with originals for design and physical integrity
- Careful, thorough restoration of surfaces
- Protective treatments as necessary for old materials
- Installation of new features needs to be in keeping with the heritage design, and assessed in terms of any possible building issues, particularly if connected to the heritage building
